Adult Basic Education

Are you ready to make a change for better in your world? We can help...
You got that job, even without a diploma. Or, you got through day-to-day life okay, even if reading or math was never easy. That's how it went for many of the adults who come to see us at the Learning Center. They got by, even without good academic skills or a high school diploma.
Then something changed...
"They reclassified the jobs at work, and now my position requires a high school diploma," students have told us. Or, "With my own kids in school I feel like I should get my diploma."
Or, "I want to read books to my grandchildren, not just turn the pages and make up the story as I go along.
Any reason is the right reason to get better skills now!
How Do I Start?
- With a brief interview with one of our staff we'll discuss your education background and how school can fit into your lifestyle.
- We'll give you some brief evaluations to measure your strengths and weaknesses in reading, writing, and math. Before you leave, you'll probably meet some of our teachers and some of our other students.
- We'll review your evaluations and based on your particular learning goals, we will set up an individual learning plan to help you reach them.
- Once you become a student you'll join our teachers and students, working one-on-one, and in small groups. We know how to put you at ease. The pace of work and the topics covered will fit your own needs.
How long will this take? Many of our students reach their learning goals in just 3 to 9 months.
What if I just left school recently? Even students who just recently left high school in their junior or senior years may need ABE classes to "brush up" a particular topic area before attempting to complete the GED exam, or the requirements for one of our other high school diploma programs.
ABE Facts:
- All ABE and GED preparation classes are free to Wallingford residents.
- ABE classes improve fundamental academic skills and/or can help prepare an adult to earn a high school diploma.
- You may join any of these classes or our GED preparation classes anytime during the semester.
